Engagement Rate Calculator
Calculate social media engagement rate by reach or by followers — and switch between the two formulas depending on your platform and reporting needs.
Your Engagement Rate
—
Formula Engagement Rate = (Engagements ÷ Reach) × 100
How to use this calculator
Select "By Reach" (the default, and the standard for Instagram, TikTok, and most current platforms) or "By Followers" (the older method, still used in influencer reporting and some legacy benchmarks). Enter the denominator (reach or followers) and the total engagements. The calculator returns your engagement rate. Use the "Calculate" selector to solve for engagement volume or audience size based on a target rate.
What is Engagement Rate?
Engagement rate is the percentage of your audience that interacts with your content — liking, commenting, sharing, saving, or otherwise engaging. It's the most-reported metric in organic social media because it measures content resonance relative to audience size. There are two common ways to calculate it: engagement per reach (which reflects how your content performs with the people who actually saw it) and engagement per follower (which reflects how your content performs against your total audience). Most modern platforms favor the reach-based calculation because algorithmic distribution means not every follower sees every post.

Frequently asked questions
What is a good engagement rate?
Engagement rate benchmarks vary by platform and account size. On Instagram, 1–3% by reach is average for business accounts, with 3%+ considered strong. TikTok engagement rates are typically higher, often 5–10% by reach. LinkedIn averages 2–4%. Smaller accounts (under 10K followers) generally see higher engagement rates than larger ones because their audiences tend to be more connected and niche.
Should I calculate engagement rate by reach or followers?
By reach is the modern standard because it reflects the actual audience your content reached. By followers is still used in influencer marketing rate cards and legacy reporting, but it can undersell accounts with good algorithmic performance (whose content reaches beyond their follower base) or oversell accounts with high follower counts and low post reach. Use reach when available; fall back to followers when reach data isn't accessible.
How is engagement rate calculated?
By Reach: (Total Engagements ÷ Reach) × 100. By Followers: (Total Engagements ÷ Followers) × 100. If 800 people engaged with a post that reached 20,000 accounts, your reach-based engagement rate is 4.00%.
What counts as an engagement?
Typically: likes, comments, shares, saves, and sometimes video views (though many teams track video views separately). Some platforms count sticker taps, profile visits, or link clicks. Stay consistent across reports — if you include saves in one month's calculation, include them in the next.
How is engagement rate different on paid vs organic posts?
Paid engagement rates are typically lower than organic because paid reach targets broader, less-connected audiences. Report them separately — combining paid and organic engagement rates muddies the measurement of both. Most social teams track paid engagement rate as a secondary metric and prioritize CTR, CPC, and CPA for paid campaigns.
How do I improve engagement rate?
Post formats that invite interaction (questions, carousels, polls), hooks that earn the first 2–3 seconds of attention, consistent posting schedule, strong hooks in captions, replying to comments promptly, and leaning into formats the algorithm is currently promoting. Test variations and double down on what outperforms your baseline.
Does follower count affect engagement rate?
Yes — usually inversely. Smaller accounts often see higher engagement rates because their audiences are more engaged and niche. Large accounts (millions of followers) typically see lower percentages even when their absolute engagement numbers are enormous. This is why influencer pricing often accounts for engagement rate, not just follower count.
